Toccata and Fugue in D minor for young kids!

Oct 28, 2021

Ready for some spooky pipe organ music?? This video comes right out of our "Autumn All Around" course.

This is an iconic piece of classical music for this time of year and a fun way to engage with it for you and your little one. (We sneak in some music education as always too!)

How to prepare:

  • Grab a small blanket or large scarf
  • Grab some type of small objects to bounce around on your blanket. We used some small play spiders. Cotton balls are also fun (And they’re even bouncier than the spiders we used!).
  • Have your scarves and instruments handy - Charlotte and Elizabeth will leave the studio toward the end of the video, to allow time and space for your own creative listening/movement.

How to adapt/extend:

  • Let the music inspire you and your child, to make up a story to go along with the music. Tell the story as you listen or act it out with your bodies, or even bring in some stuffed animal friends to help!

What your child is learning:

  • Musical concept of “rest”
  • Instrument identification: pipe organ

Note about the piece: This is one of JS Bach's most famous compositions, as well as one of the most famous pieces written for the organ. It is formally known as "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565", and was made famous largely by it's inclusion in Walt Disney's Fantasia.
