Musical Moments Day 5

Notes for Parents:

You made it to day 5, congratulations!  🥳 How have you enjoyed the activities this week?

I had to include what is probably my most favorite Classical music activities on the last day of our week of Musical Moments.

Classical music has so much power to spark our imaginations, and in this listening activity we showcase how fun it can be to let our imaginations run wild while listening to music.

We’ve created an exciting story about a dragon, a bunny, and an eagle in direct response to Beethoven’s musical motives, and I haven’t met many kids who weren’t spellbound as we shared. (This one plays on repeat in many homes, and we’re not sad about it!)

As your child listens to the iconic, gripping 5th Symphony by Beethoven with me, they are working on listening skills, developing their imagination, creativity, storytelling, sequencing, and identifying musical form.

I’ve included a free printable to accompany this activity if you’d like to make your own flannel board or popsicle puppets with the characters from the story we’ve created.  Click here to download.

Here are some ideas on how to adapt and extend this activity.

  • Get a friend, spouse, or sibling  to help act out the story with you and your child.
  • Develop your story by creating a more detailed setting for your puppets to carry out their adventures in.
  • Eventually try acting out the story without the video -- just use the audio of Beethoven 5th, only!
  • This video uses just the beginning of Beethoven's 5th symphony. Listen to the rest of the symphony. What happens to the characters next? (Here is a link to a Youtube video of the first movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony.)

We hope you enjoy the last video of our "Musical Moments" Musical Play Series, and don't forget to let us know how you've liked the weeks' activities!
